Week 11 Cause – Effect
Cause – Effect – Cause – Effect – Cause – Effect
Charles Haanel tells us in the introduction to Chapter 11 of the Masterkey System that ‘every effect is the result of a cause, the effect in turn becomes a cause, which creates other effects, which in turn create still other causes.’
Have you ever felt like you were in an emotional loop? That somehow life seems to keep bringing you similar situations, people and circumstances, whether they are wanted or unwanted? Through a process called inductive reasoning our conscious mind is able to look at a variety of instances and compare them instantly. ‘Inductive reasoning is the process of the objective mind, by which we compare a number of separate instances with one another until we see the common factor that gives rise to them all. We see people in every civilized country on the globe, securing results by some process which they do not seem to understand themselves, and to which they usually attach more or less mystery. Our reason is given to us for the purpose of ascertaining the law by which these results are accomplished.’ (Haanel 11:20)
Our mind is like a HUGE filing system of boxes that are all labelled and cross referenced. When we encounter something our brain instantly finds the box with the information from past experiences to enable us to identify, compare and then process, creating a reaction, thought or feeling in us. This happens so fast that it often feels like we have no control over our feelings and emotions. We believe we just feel the way we feel, and so act accordingly, saying something like ‘that’s just the way I am.’
This system works well provided the information we have stored away in our mental boxes is accurate and true. However, often the things we believe are inaccurate, because they are based on half truths from the opinions of others. How do you know if your reference point is correct? And what happens when we are faced with a new, unfamiliar situation? What if we have no reference point to be able to decipher a course of action. We need to create a new box. How do we decide what to do? What feelings will you attach to this new box?
The Law of Dual Thought says, ‘we can attach any feeling to a thought we want’, meaning when we experience something new, and have no preconceived idea or feeling about it, we can choose whether to attach a positive or negative feeling to it.
Some people LOVE swimming, and others avoid it. Some people LOVE roller coaster rides and others DO NOT. A baby is not born with a mental box file that says water is dangerous, or roller coasters are scary. These are feelings we have attached either through personal experiences, or often because of someone else’s experience. These thoughts create an effect which in turn create another cause. These neural pathways can be very strong and take some shifting if we want to change our life. We create such amazing obstacles for ourselves in our minds. What causes our belief system? Maybe you had one bad experience and now believe you’re not able to do something again our of fear. Maybe someone you know had a bad experience and told you about it. As you had no other point of reference at the time to compare this information with you took this belief on as your own. And now you have a false mental image.
We know that the laws governing electricity, gravity, magnetism, heat, cold and gases are reliable and trustworthy. It is up to us to work within these laws and use them to create the things we want. It seems to me that if these laws are proven to be scientifically stable, then there is no reason to doubt that all the other laws of the Universe are also fixed, actual, immutable principles. When you accept this, you have something solid, trustworthy and eternal to depend on, rather than misconceived ideas. We have complete control over what we allow ourselves to think and believe.
‘We are first to believe that our desire has already been fulfilled, its accomplishments will then follow. This is a concise direction for making use of the creative power of thought by impressing on the Universal subjective mind, the particular thing which we desire as an already existing fact.’ (Haanel 11:18)
